Brighouse Landscaping & Driveways lays block paving across Rastrick for driveways, paths, patios and the areas in between. We also lift, relay and re-sand existing block paving that has sunk, spread or weeded over. Our customers are Rastrick homeowners who want a surface that handles cars and weather, looks right against brick and render, and can be repaired in sections if it ever needs to be.
Block paving done well depends on what you cannot see. The blocks rarely fail; the sub-base, edge restraints and jointing decide whether a drive is still flat in ten years. We build those properly on every job in Brighouse, with Type 1 MOT compacted in layers, concrete-haunched edges and kiln-dried sand vibrated into the joints.
Read on for the block types we use, how they suit Rastrick properties, our laying process and what affects the cost in Brighouse.
What Block Paving in Rastrick Involves
Block paving is a flexible surface made of individual concrete or clay blocks laid on a sand bed over a compacted stone sub-base. The blocks are held together by friction and the sand in the joints, not mortar, which is why the surface can flex slightly without cracking and why individual blocks can be lifted for access to pipes.
In Rastrick we lay three main types:
- Standard concrete blocks in 50 or 60 millimetre thickness for paths and patios, 60 or 80 millimetres for driveways
- Clay pavers, which keep their colour for life and suit older brick houses
- Permeable concrete blocks with wider joints and an open-graded sub-base, so rainwater drains through the surface
Patterns matter for strength. We lay driveways in 45 or 90 degree herringbone because it interlocks against the turning forces of a car. Stretcher bond and basketweave are fine for paths and patios. A contrasting border or soldier course frames the area and stops the pattern wandering.
We also carry out repairs: lifting sunken areas, replacing the failed sub-base, relaying the original blocks and refilling joints, with sealing if you want it.
Suitability for Rastrick Properties
Block paving suits most homes, whether your Rastrick property is a Victorian terrace with a narrow front garden or a newer estate house with a wider frontage. On terraced and semi-detached properties the main use is a front drive and path to the door, often with a small border retained to satisfy the permeability rule. Permeable blocks make this easy: the whole frontage can be paved and still drain without planning permission.
Where the ground is clay, which is firm when dry and soft when wet, that means a slightly deeper dig and a thicker sub-base than you would need on gravel or chalk. On a clay-based driveway in Rastrick we typically excavate 250 to 300 millimetres, lay a membrane to stop the stone mixing into the clay, and compact at least 150 millimetres of Type 1 before the sand bed.
In a back garden in Rastrick, block paving works for patios and paths where you want something harder-wearing than slabs, and if you have a side passage it suits that too because blocks cope with wheelie bins better than loose gravel.
Block Paving: Step by Step
- Survey and quote. We measure, check levels and falls, locate manholes and services, and agree the block type, pattern and edging. The quote states excavation depth and sub-base thickness.
- Excavation. Old surfaces and soft ground are removed with a mini digger and taken away under our waste carrier licence.
- Edge restraints. Kerbs or edging blocks are set in concrete and haunched on the outside so the paving cannot spread under load.
- Sub-base. A geotextile membrane is laid, then Type 1 MOT or open-graded stone for permeable paving, compacted with a plate compactor in layers.
- Screeding. Sharp sand is screeded to a level 30 to 40 millimetre bed, set to a fall of at least 1 in 80 away from the house.
- Laying and cutting. Blocks are laid from a straight edge in the chosen pattern, with cuts made on a bench saw for tight, clean joints around manholes and edges.
- Compaction and jointing. The surface is vibrated down, kiln-dried sand is brushed into the joints and the area is vibrated again until the joints are full.
A single driveway in Rastrick takes three to five working days. Larger drives or those with complex borders take longer. We lay to BS 7533 guidance throughout Brighouse.
What Affects the Cost of Block Paving in Rastrick
Your written quote from Brighouse Landscaping & Driveways breaks the price into its parts. The main variables are:
- Area to be paved, and whether it is a driveway (thicker blocks, deeper sub-base) or a patio or path
- Block type: standard concrete, premium textured concrete, clay or permeable
- Excavation depth, which follows the ground conditions and what is being removed
- Disposal of old paving, concrete and spoil
- Edge restraints, steps, retaining and any brickwork at the boundary
- Drainage, including channel drains, gullies or an open-graded permeable build-up
- Pattern complexity, borders and the number of cuts around manholes and curves
- Access to the site for deliveries and the digger, particularly if your street is narrow
- Optional sealing after laying
Relaying existing blocks is usually cheaper than a new drive because the blocks are reused, but it depends how much of the sub-base has failed.
Other Services in Rastrick
Block paving is one of several ways to surface a drive. To compare it with resin bound, tarmac or gravel, see our Driveway Installation service in Rastrick. For back gardens, Landscaping brings together patios, lawns, fencing, walls and planting as one design. Once laid, block paving benefits from an occasional re-sand and weed treatment, which our Garden Maintenance team can include in a regular visit. All of these services are quoted from our Brighouse base.

Your Questions Answered
Does block paving need planning permission in Rastrick?
Not if it is permeable or drains to a lawn or border within your property. Standard blocks over a Type 1 base are not permeable, so for a front area over 5 square metres you need either permeable blocks and an open-graded base, or drainage to a soakaway. We advise on the right route for your Brighouse property at the quote stage.
Why has my existing block paving in Rastrick sunk?
Almost always because the sub-base was too thin, was not compacted properly or the edge restraints have moved and let the blocks spread. Sometimes a leaking drain has washed out the bedding sand. We lift the affected area, rebuild the base and relay the original blocks, which is far cheaper than replacing the whole drive.
Should I have my block paving sealed?
Sealing is optional. It reduces weed growth in the joints, stabilises the sand and makes oil and algae easier to clean off, but it needs reapplying every few years and changes the surface finish slightly. We discuss the pros and cons for each Rastrick job and can seal a few weeks after laying once the blocks have settled.
How long will a block paved driveway last in Brighouse?
With a correctly built sub-base and edge restraints, decades. Clay pavers in particular hold their colour indefinitely. The only routine maintenance is topping up the jointing sand every few years, clearing weeds and occasionally pressure washing. We provide a written guarantee on every block paving job in Rastrick.
